The investigation represents the product of a contract with the National Park Service and Fort Stewart. The current delivery order's survey tracts consisted of NRMUs B20.3, C7.1, C9.1, C9.3, E3.1, E3.2, E3.3, E10.1, E10.2, E10.3, E22.4, E22.5, F2.2, F2.3, F3.2, and F3.3. Two hundred one cultural resources were examined during the fieldwork (Table 1). The resources included 98 sites and 103 isolated finds. Two of the sites (9L1973 and 9LI1026) were recommended as potentially eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). One of the sites (9LI1134) was recorded as having unknown National Register standing pending further work. The remaining cultural resources were considered ineligible for NRHP inclusion. The current study includes background contextual information as well as data analyses. Background contextual information includes a detailed discussion of historic roadways on Fort Stewart. The data analyses include a study of site locations in respect to various environmental variables. Various distributional studies are undertaken herein including analysis of sites and artifact data on both the intrasite and intersite levels. An examination of patterns of early historic settlement is also undertaken.
