Abstract

On April 28, 2003, staff archeologists from the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) conducted an archeological survey for the grading, drainage, base and surfacing on Old Milan Road, from CR 106 to CR 97 in Telfair County, Georgia (Figure 1). The survey was conducted in compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and amendments thereto, and the Georgia Environmental Policy Act of 1991. The goals of the survey were to locate, document, and assess archeological resources, which may be eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) and the Georgia Register of Historic Places (GRHP) located within the proposed project's area of potential effect (APE). No National Register-listed or eligible historic properties, including archeological sites, buildings, structures, or other objects were identified in or adjacent to the area of survey, other then the Cook farmstead, which is discussed in the historic resources survey. dated July 2, 2003. Therefore, it is concluded that implementation of the proposed GDOT project to grade, add drainage and surface to Old Milan Road from CR 106 to CR 97, Telfair County, will not affect archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion on the NRHP or the GRHP, provided that the project conforms to the present design concept.
