Abstract

From February 18 to 20, 2004, Environmental Services, Inc. (ESI) performed an intensive cultural resource assessment survey of a 25-acre tract in Jeff Davis County, Georgia, on behalf of Thomas and Hutton Engineering Company. The property is intended for a new Wal-Mart store, and the goal of the survey was to locate, identify, delineate, and evaluate all cultural resources within the parcel, including prehistoric and historic archaeological sites, as well as historic structures. The cultural resource assessment survey included a pedestrian inspection combined with systematic shovel testing at 15 and 30-meter intervals. Two archaeological sites (9JD 100 and 9JD101) were recorded and one isolated find was documented during the study; no standing structures were within the property. Both of the sites were light density artifact scatters and, based on the results, it is recommended that the proposed project be granted clearance to proceed without further concern for impacts to significant cultural resources.
