Abstract

This report is the result of archaeological investigations on U.S. Forest Service land on the Apalachee River near the Morgan County community of Swords, Georgia. The Georgia Power Company, in accordance with their plans to construct the Wallace Dam, proposes to relocate the present bridge and county highway over the Apalachee River. At the request of Georgia Power the author began an archaeological survey of the proposed right-of-way and borrow pit areas to determine whether any archaeological sites would be affected by the project. Examination of the relocation maps furnished by Georgia Power indicated that two previously recorded archaeological sites, 9Mg73 and 9Mg94, on the west side of the River will be adversely affected by construction activity. These sites were located in 1975 during an archaeological survey of the proposed Wallace Basin by the Department of Anthropology, University of Georgia. On the 20th and 23rd of October, 1975 the author visited the project area and conducted an intensive surface and subsurface survey for the purpose of determining whether there were other sites in the proposed right-of-way which would be affected. All exposed ground was surface searched and small shovel tests were made at irregular intervals throughout the project area. No additional sites were encountered although surface survey on the east side of the river was hampered by poor ground surface exposure.
