Abstract

New South Associates conducted limited Phase I archaeological survey at 1 1 bridges located in nine counties, Dooly, Fayette, Houston, Lamar, Meriwether, Sumter, Troup, Twiggs, and Upson. The bridge piles are slated for replacement and the limited survey was aimed at directing heavy equipment away from quadrants at each bridge which contain eligible resources requiring consideration under Section 106 of the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The existing right-of-way at each bridge was identified as the Area of Potential Effect (APE) and thus all archaeological study was confined to these boundaries. No previously recorded archaeological sites were located within the APE of any of the 1 1 bridges and no undiscovered sites were recorded during the study. A single isolated find, consisting of a sherd of plain cream colored ware was recovered at Bridge 1(093-0050-0) in Dooly County. No further archaeological study at Bridge 1(093-0050-0), or the other 10 bridges included in the District 3 Bridge Pile Replacement Project is recommended.
