Abstract

The study consists of limited Phase I Archaeological Survey at 19 bridges located in the ten different South Georgia Counties listed above. Work for the Bridge Maintenance Project will consist of lifting the existing bridge decks by crane, placing them on the road bed, pulling the pilings and then replacing the pilings, as well as the addition of fill to support new guardrails at eight of the 19 bridges. The purpose of the archaeological study was to identify any quadrants at each of the bridges which might contain archaeological resources which would be disturbed by the storage or operation of heavy equipment used for the project. Work for the study consisted of full background research for each of the bridges, and limited shovel test excavation at each bridge within the existing right-of-way.
