Abstract

In the Winter of 1980 an intensive archaeological survey was conducted for Georgia Department of Transportation Project #1-575-1(1): the Etowah River/1-575 bridge crossing between the Etowah River and S.R. 5 just North of Canton, Georgia, in Cherokee County. Random and controlled surface collecting and auger and formal testing revealed the presence of a prehistoric site on a natural rise or levee about 300 feet North of the river. The site appears to date from Late Archaic/Early Woodland to Protohistoric times and contains, in addition to surface materials, a thin buried midden and subsurface features. Because of the potential for yielding new and complimentary data, the site is suggested for National Register of Historic Places Eligibility Determination.
