Brockington and Associates, Inc. conducted an intensive Phase I archaeological resources survey at the proposed Lumber City Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP) between 26 - 27 April 2004, in Telfair County, Georgia. These investigations were carried out for Hofstadter and Associates, Inc., and with the city of Lumber City, in compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), by personnel qualified under 36 CFR Part 61. The project tract covers approximately 2.0 hectares (5.0 acres) north of the Ocmulgee River and south of the Little Ocmulgee River in Lumber City. Background research at the Archaeological Site Files at the University of Georgia, Athens, found no previously recorded archaeological resources within the project tract and seven within a 1.6 km (1 mi) radius of the project tract. Six of these resources, which have unknown NRHP eligibility, are not located within an area of direct or indirect effect for the construction of the proposed waste water treatment facility. The other archaeological resource, which has been recommended as ineligible, was given no further consideration. Phase I archaeological survey consisted of screened shovel tests at 30 meter (100 ft) intervals. A visual inspection of all exposed ground surfaces was also conducted. One isolated find, consisting of one chert flake fragment, was recorded. Isolated finds are generally not considered eligible for the NRHP. Archaeological resources clearance is recommended.
