Abstract

On February 7, 8, 17, 28, 1981, on-site Cultural Resource studies of the proposed Covington-Newton County Force Main Project © 130465-02) construction corridors was conducted. No Cultural Resources were located in the proposed construction area contracted for study. One archaeological site was located in an area adjacent to the construction corridor adjacent to the Yellow River It is felt that this "deflated" Old Quartz period site is not significant and is not eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places. Adjunct to the contracted survey, a research study of the Newton County Courthouse records was wade in an effort to ascertain the location of the old will which was thought to have been present in the vicinity of Cedar Shoals. These investigations of the courthouse records plus on site evaluation indicated that this historic will was probably located about 0.2 miles up stream from the project area. Since no Cultural Resources were located in the construction corridor for the proposed sewer lines, this report recommends, from a Cultural Resources standpoint, that the project be allow d to proceed.
