Abstract

The survey reported here was designed to locate archeological sites in the expanded area of potential effect of a bridge replacement project in northeastern Laurens County, Georgia. The original survey (July 12, 2002) found no adverse effect to significant archeological resources. The resurvey located one prehistoric archeological site at south end of the project area, at the crossing of SR 26 over Pughes Creek. An attempt to evaluate the located resource's eligibility for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) was made, to the limited extent possible from a few shovel tests within the projects' narrow corridors. The eligibility of the site on the whole remains unknown due to the methodological limitations of testing only within the project corridor. However, the sampled portions of the located site would not contribute to NRHP eligibility. Therefore Southeastern Archeological Services, Inc. maintains its original recommendation: the proposed bridge replacement project at SR 26 over Pughes Creek would not have any adverse effect upon significant archeological resources.
