Abstract

New South Associates conducted a Phase I archaeological survey of two tracts in Clayton County totaling approximately 12 acres. The tracts would be used in the construction of the Macon to Atlanta Corridor of the Rail Passenger Program. One survey area was located in historic downtown Jonesboro, adjacent to the county courthouse, at the intersection of Courthouse Way and Courthouse Street. This area measured roughly 2 acres and consisted of urban residential plots. The second surveyed area was located in Lovejoy, Georgia, approximately seven miles south of Jonesboro. No previously recorded archaeological sites were recorded as lying in or immediately adjacent to the study parcels. The remains of a historic residential structure (Site 9Cn155) were discovered off Tara Boulevard along the southwestern edge of the Lovejoy Tract. Due to the disturbed context of the site and general ubiquitous nature of the findings, no further archaeological study of Site 9Cn 155 or the study tracts is recommended. recommended.
