Abstract

The survey described here was designed to locate and evaluate archeological sites in the area of a Chattooga County bridge replacement project proposed by the Georgia Department of Transportation, at the crossing of County Route (CR) 321 over the Chattooga River, about 1.6 km (1 mi) south of Lyerly. The area of potential effect (APE) for this project was defined as a corridor about 332 m (1090 ft) long, extending about 180 m (590 ft) from the middle of the river on the northwestern approach and about 152 m (500 ft) from the middle of the river on the southeastern approach. The APE corridor's width extends to the southwest and northeast between about 27 and 32 m (90 and 105 ft) from the edges of existing pavement. The survey located one archeological site partly within the project area, a prehistoric and historic era site that covers the entire project area on the southeastern approach. This archeological site contains a standing structure (a barn), a scatter of aboriginal artifacts including potsherds, and two historic era house sites. Due to the site's potential for significant prehistoric era data, we recommend avoidance or further testing to evaluate its eligibility for the National Register of Historical Places.
