Abstract

This report presents an historic overview of stabilization efforts and repair work done to the river side, or front side, of Old Fort Jackson during the 1970s and 1980s. This study involved archival background research for records pertaining to three U. S. Army Corps Of Engineers, Savannah District projects and one Georgia Department Of Natural Resources Parks Recreation And Historic Sites Division project at the fort in 1971, 1973-74, 1977-1979, and 1983. After this research, an historic record of projects at Old Fort Jackson was compiled through oral history interviews with individuals either involved in or highly knowledgeable about one or more of the projects. Historic construction drawings, collected during the fieldwork, are included in Appendix B, while transcriptions of the seven oral history interviews are provided in Appendix C. New South Associates conducted the project fieldwork in March and April 2004.
