Abstract

The survey described here was designed to locate and evaluate archeological sites in the area of an approximately half-mile (800 m) long transmission line and approximately 3 ac (1.2 ha) substation tract in Meriwether County, Georgia. One archeological site (9MW50) was located, with artifacts from the prehistoric period and structures and artifacts from the historic period. The prehistoric component lacks significance due to poor preservation and sparse, non-diagnostic artifacts. The historic component, representing a late nineteenth to mid twentieth century farm, is a recent complex from a period best researched through non-archeological methods. Furthermore, the historic period deposits have been compromised by logging and highway construction. Therefore, they too lack archeological significance. We recommend that the one archeological site within the area of potential effect for this project, site 9MW50, is not eligible for listing is the National Register of Historic Places. As a result, the project is expected to have no effect upon significant archeological resources. Notwithstanding other considerations, we recommend the project be allowed to proceed as planned.
