The Georgia Transmission Corporation is proposing to construct an electrical substation on a 2.0 ha (5 ac) tract of land in suburbanized central Gwinnett County. In compliance with the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, they commissioned an archeological survey of the tract that had the goal of locating and assessing the significance of, in terms of eligibility to the National Register of Historic Places, all archeological sites in the project area. Archival research and field survey was conducted during the week of August 28, 2000. Archival research showed that no known sites and no historic structures (older than 50 years) are recorded on the tract. The field survey discovered one site (9GW500), which is a highly disturbed, sparse prehistoric lithic scatter. We recommend that site 9GW500 is not eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places. Thus, in regard to archeological resources, we recommend that the project be given clearance to proceed.
