Abstract

The Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forests recently completed a cultural resource survey for the proposed 36 acre Weaver Creek Southern Pine Beetle prevention project on the Toccoa Ranger District along the Fannin and Gilmer County line. The fieldwork involved intensive archeological survey of the proposed project area to identify and evaluate heritage resources, and assess project effects on recorded properties. Fieldwork was completed on June 9, 2005 with five new archeological sites recorded. One historic house site (9GI152), one prehistoric lithic scatter (9GI154), and three rock features (9GI153, 9GI154, and 9GI155) likely associated with nineteenth century cultivation were recorded. Of the five sites, 9GI152, 9G1153, and 9GI154 are recommended ineligible for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Sites 9GI155 and 9GI156 are of unknown eligibility and will require additional documentation and investigation for a determination. Sites 9GI155 and 9GI156 are good examples of historic rock features. The distinction between historic rock piles and prehistoric stone mounds at the survey level is problematic (Gresham 1990, Loubser 1999). Protection of such properties will provide a resource base for future testing, and comparison with prehistoric stone mounds.
