Abstract

Intensive archaeological survey was conducted by Southern Research in 1996 and 1997 on two land management compartments, E-03 and E-08, which are located in Chattahoochee County, Georgia. This work was done for the U.S. Army Infantry Center, Directorate of Public Works, Environmental Division, Fort Benning Military Reservation, in compliance with Section 110 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) of 1966. A total of 482 acres (195 ha) in Compartment E03 and 381 acres (154 ha) in Compartment E-08 were examined by intensive survey. A total of 31 archaeological loci (20 sites and 11 isolated finds) was identified in the two compartments. Sixteen sites (6 in Compartment E-03 and 10 in Compartment E-08) were identified that may be eligible for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Protective measures and additional testing are recommended for these sites.
