A Cultural Resources Survey of Compartments D-11 and D-17 Fort Benning Military Reservation Chattahoochee County, Georgia

Abstract

Intensive archaeological survey was conducted by Southern Research in 1996 and 1997 in two land management compartments, D-11 and D-17, which are located in Chattahoochee County, Georgia. This work was done for the U.S. Army Infantry Center, Directorate of Public Works, Environmental Division, Fort Benning Military Reservation, in compliance with Section 110 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) of 1966. A total of 312 acres (126 ha) was examined in Compartment D-11 and 521 acres (211 ha) was examined in Compartment D-17. Approximately 358 acres of Compartment D-17 was previously surveyed. A total of 15 archaeological loci (9 sites and 6 isolated finds) was identified in Compartment D-11. Two sites in this compartment may be eligible for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). A total of 15 archaeological loci (9 sites and 6 isolated finds) was identified in Compartment D-17. Five sites in this compartment may be eligible for the NRHP. Protective measures are recommended for the seven potentially eligible sites in Compartments D-11 and D-17.
