Abstract

At the request of the National Park Service, Southeastern Regional Office, and the U.S. Army Infantry Center, Environmental Management Division, an intensive Phase I archaeological survey of a 506.3-acre (204.9-ha) portion of Ft. Benning Military Reservation's Compartment A-14, in Chattahoochee County, Georgia was conducted by Panamerican Consultants, Inc. The study area consists of a narrow strip of land located on the Chattahoochee River between the mouths of Oswichee and Shell Creeks, and south of Sunshine Road, in the southwestern portion of the Ft. Benning Military Reservation. Fieldwork for the 489-acre initial study area was conducted during December 1994 and January 1995. An additional 17.3 acres was surveyed in August 1995.The survey resulted in the relocation of eight previously recorded archaeological sites (9CE171-176, 9CE216, and 9CE217), and in the documentation of 17 new archaeological sites (9CE702-818). Additionally, eight isolated finds were recorded in the same manner as sites. A total of 943 artifacts were recovered and analyzed during the project.
