Abstract

New South Associates conducted Phase I archaeological survey of 664 acres in area BB02 of the Fort Benning Military Reservation, Chattahoochee County, during the period from May 1 through May 9, 1995. Mr. John D. Congleton conducted geomorphological research of this tract on May 6, 1995. The project area is located south of Upatoi Creek and is bordered on the east by Victory Drive and on the west by Dougherty Creek. The southern border of the study area is partially bordered by Marne Road and then follows the treeline in the southern most corner of the project area. The survey located 11 archaeological sites and two isolated finds. Three of these are multicomponent sites with mid nineteenth century historic material and Archaic to Mississippian prehistoric components. Three sites are prehistoric, including two lithic scatters and a Stallings Island Late Archaic site. One site is an historic domestic site which may date to the mid nineteenth century. Three of the other sites located are surface scatters, two containing both historic and prehistoric material and the other only historic artifacts. The final site is a historic landscape feature. Sites 9Ce691 and 9Ce693 appear to contain intact deposits and a high probability of intact features. These two sites are recommended to be potentially eligible for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places. Sites 9Ce692, 9Ce694, 9Ce695, 9Ce696, 9Ce697, 9Ce698, 9Ce699, 9Ce700 and 9Ce701 contain no apparent subsurface remains and are recommended as not eligible to the National Register of Historic Places.
