Abstract

A Phase I archaeological survey of an 821 acre (332.3 ha) portion of Ft. Benning Military Reservation's Compartment X-03, in Russell County, Alabama, was conducted by Panamerican Consultants, Inc. This compartment is located in the southwestern portion of Ft. Benning Military Reservation, approximately 2.5 km from the Chattahoochee River and is currently used as a airborne training drop zone (Fryar Field). Field investigations took seven days, from December 5 to 11, 1994, utilizing a crew of nine individuals. Our survey resulted in the recording of 14 new archaeological sites (1Ru253-266), 19 isolated finds, and a revisit of one historic cemetery. Two of the archaeological sites have prehistoric components, one of which also yielded some isolated historic material. Twelve sites have historic components, and two of these also produced prehistoric isolated finds. Ten sites are purely historic. The historic site components range from the late nineteenth century domestic to World War II era military (ca. 1941-1955).
