Abstract

Intensive archaeological survey was conducted by Southern Research in 1998 and 1999 in land management Compartments L-02, M-01, and M-02, which are located in Muscogee County, Georgia. This work was done for the U.S. Army Infantry Center, Directorate of Public Works, Environmental Division, Fort Benning Military Reservation, in compliance with Section 110 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) of 1966. Compartment L-02 contains 313 acres (127 ha), which was entirely covered in the present study. A total of 10 archaeological loci (8 sites and 2 isolated finds) was identified in Compartment L-02. Four sites in Compartment L-02 may be eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Compartment — 01 contains 254 acres (103 ha), which was entirely covered in the present study. A total of six archaeological loci (4 sites and 2 isolated finds) were identified in Compartment M-01. One site in Compartment M-01 may be eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Compartment M-02 contains 746 acres (302 ha), of which 62 acres (25 ha) were previously examined and 684 acres (277 ha) were covered by the present study. A total of 15 archaeological loci (11 sites and 4 isolated finds) was identified in Compartment M-02. One site was identified by previous survey in Compartment M-02 and this site [which is designated Eric Poplin's M5-1, no Georgia site number] was not revisited in the present study. Four sites in Compartment — 02 may be eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Protective measures are recommended for these potentially eligible sites.
