Abstract

Intensive archaeological survey was conducted by Southern Research in 1996 and 1997 on two land management compartments, A-06 and BB-05, which are located near the main cantonment in Chattahoochee County, Georgia. This work was done for the U.S. Army Infantry Center, Directorate of Public Works, Environmental Division, Fort Benning Military Reservation, in compliance with Section 110 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) of 1966. Twenty-five archaeological loci were identified. Three sites were identified that may be eligible for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Protective measures are recommended for these three sites. Sites 9Ce1273, 9Ce1270, and 9Ce1272, located in Compartment BB-05, contain buried aboriginal materials that may have research value. The other resources identified on these compartments are deemed ineligible for inclusion in the NRHP. These three sites in Compartment BB-05 should be protected from adverse impact until their NRHP eligibility status can be fully ascertained.
