Abstract

Intensive archaeological survey was conducted by Southern Research in 1998 and 1999 in land management Compartment A-19, which is located in Chattahoochee County, Georgia. This work was done for the U.S. Army Infantry Center, Directorate of Public Works, Environmental Division, Fort Benning Military Reservation, in compliance with Section 110 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) of 1966. A total of 261 acres (106 ha) was examined. Approximately 92 acres (37 ha) of Compartment A-19 was previously surveyed. A total of 12 archaeological loci (10 sites and 2 isolated finds) was identified in Compartment A-19. Eight sites in this compartment merit additional research and protection from disturbance. Two sites, 9Ce65/9Ce66 and 9Ce80 were determined to be eligible for listing in the NRHP. Six other sites in this compartment were considered potentially eligible for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Protective measures are recommended for these potentially eligible sites.
