A Cultural Resources Survey of Compartment G-07 and H-02 Fort Benning Military Reservation Chattahoochee County, Georgia

Abstract

Intensive archaeological survey was conducted by Southern Research from 1998 to 2000 in land management Compartments G-07 and H-02, which are located in Chattahoochee County, Georgia. This work was done for the U.S. Army Infantry Center, Directorate of Public Works, Environmental Division, Fort Benning Military Reservation, in compliance with Section 110 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) of 1966.Compartment G-07 contains 495 acres, (58 acres previously surveyed and 437 previously unsurveyed acres) examined in the present study. A total of 20 archaeological loci (16 sites and 4 isolated finds) was identified in Compartment G-07. None of these sites were previously recorded. Twelve sites in this compartment may be eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP).Compartment H-02 contains 586 acres, which includes 143 acres previously surveyed and 443 previously unsurveyed acres examined in the present study. A total of 10 archaeological loci (6 sites and 4 isolated finds) was identified in Compartment H-02. None of these sites were previously recorded. Four sites in this compartment may be eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Protective measures are recommended for the 17 potentially eligible sites in both study compartments.
