Abstract

Intensive archaeological survey was conducted by Southern Research in 1998 and 1999 in Compartment 1-03, which is located in Chattahoochee County, Georgia. This work was done for the U.S. Army Infantry Center, Directorate of Public Works, Environmental Division, Fort Benning Military Reservation, in compliance with Section 110 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) of 1966. A total of 513 acres (208 ha) was examined. Approximately 62 acres of Compartment 1-03 was identified as previously surveyed by Southeastern Archeological Services but no report of their work was located. Since no documentation was located, this previously surveyed area was reexamined. A total of 22 archaeological loci (12 sites and 10 isolated finds) was identified in Compartment I-03. Three previously recorded sites were revisited and one previously recorded site was not relocated and has apparently been destroyed. Five sites in this compartment may be eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Protective measures are recommended for these potentially eligible sites.
