A Cultural Resources Survey of Compartment M-07 Fort Benning Military Reservation Muscogee County, Georgia

Abstract

Intensive archaeological survey was conducted by Southern Research in 1998 and 1999 in land management compartment M-07, which is located in Muscogee County, Georgia. This work was done for the U.S. Army Infantry Center, Directorate of Public Works, Environmental Division, Fort Benning Military Reservation, in compliance with Section 110 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) of 1966. Compartment M-07 contains 1307 acres (527 ha) and a total of 957 acres (386 ha) was examined in the present study. Approximately 350 acres (141 ha) of Compartment M-07 was identified as previously surveyed by Southeastern Archeological Services and Brockington and Associates. A total of 47 archaeological loci (29 sites and 18 isolated finds) was identified in Compartment M-07. Three of these sites were previously recorded. Five sites in this compartment may be eligible for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Protective measures are recommended for these potentially eligible sites.
