A Cultural Resources Survey of Compartment X-04 Fort Benning Military Reservation Russell County, Alabama

Abstract

Intensive archaeological survey was conducted by Southern Research in land management Compartment X-04, which is located in Russell County, Alabama. This work was done for the U.S. Army Infantry Center, Directorate of Public Works, Environmental Division, Fort Benning Military Reservation, in compliance with Section 110 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) of 1966. A total of 359 acres (145 ha) was examined. A total of 15 archaeological loci (9 sites and 6 isolated find) was identified in Compartment X-04. Three of the cultural resources in this compartment are considered potentially eligible for placement in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Recommendations for the management of these potentially significant cultural resources are presented. The remaining six sites and six isolated finds were deemed ineligible for inclusion in the NRHP.
