Abstract

Intensive archaeological survey was conducted by Southern Research from 1998 through 2000 in land management Compartment K-21, which are located in Chattahoochee County, Georgia. This work was done for the U.S. Army Infantry Center, Directorate of Public Works, Environmental Division, Fort Benning Military Reservation, in compliance with Section 110 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) of 1966. Compartment K-21 contains 1,596 acres (646 ha), which includes 225 previously surveyed acres (91 ha) and 1,371 acres (555 ha) that were examined in the present study. A total of 50 archaeological loci (40 sites and 10 isolated finds) was identified in Compartment K-21. Two sites (9Me44 and 9Me73) were previously recorded in the compartment, although Site 9Me73 does not actually extend into the study compartment but is located exclusively in Compartment K-22. Another site (9Ce1227) was previously recorded during survey of adjacent compartment K-20 and this site was extended westward in the present study and its NRHP status reassessed. Twenty-one sites in this compartment may be eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Protective measures are recommended for these potentially eligible sites.
