A Cultural Resources Survey of Compartment Z-01 Fort Benning Military Reservation Russell County, Alabama

Abstract

Intensive archaeological survey was conducted by Southern Research from 1998 to 2000 in land management Compartment Z-01, which is located in Russell County, Alabama. This work was done for the U.S. Army Infantry Center, Directorate of Public Works, Environmental Division, Fort Benning Military Reservation, in compliance with Section 110 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NH PA) of 1966. Compartment Z-01 contains 1,192 acres (483 ha), of which 570 acres (231 ha) was previously examined for archaeological sites and 622 acres (252 ha) was examined in the present study. A total of eight archaeological loci (6 sites and 2 isolated finds) was examined in Compartment Z-01. Sixteen sites were previously recorded in Compartment Z-01. Three of the sites (1 Ru52, 1 Rul 03, and 1 Rul 04) in this compartment are considered eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Two additional sites (1 Ru482 and 1 Ru483) were deemed potentially eligible for listing. The remaining cultural finds were deemed ineligible for listing in the NRHP. Other potentially eligible sites, or eligible sites, are recorded in this study compartment but these were not examined as part of the present study. These include: 1 Ru12/1 Ru53, 1 Ru24, 1 Ru54, 1 Ru56/1 Rul 10/1 Rul 11, 1 Ru98, 1 Ru99, and 1 Rul05. Protective measures are recommended for these potentially eligible sites. Three other previously recorded sites (1 Rul 06, 1 Rul 28, and 1 Ru274) are considered ineligible for listing in the NRHP and were not reexamined in the present study.
