Abstract

Intensive archaeological survey was conducted by Southern Research from 1998 through 2000 of the Main Post of the Fort Benning Military Reservation, which is located in Chattahoochee and Muscogee counties, Georgia. This work was done for the U.S. Army Infantry Center, Directorate of Public Works, Environmental Division, Fort Benning Military Reservation, in compliance with Section 110 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) of 1966. The Main Post Cantonment contains 11,079 acres (4,485 ha), of which 2023 acres (819 ha) was previously examined for archaeological sites and 8493 acres (3439 ha) was examined in the present study. A total of 120 archaeological loci (82 sites and 38 isolated finds) was identified in the Main Post. Eight of these sites were previously recorded. Two of these sites are listed as eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) and 42 other sites that were visited by this survey may be eligible for inclusion. Nineteen other archaeological sites on the Main Post were not revisited in the present study. Of these, 13 were deemed potentially eligible for inclusion in the NRHP. Protective measures are recommended for these eligible and potentially eligible sites.
