Abstract

From July 20 to 21 and on August 1, 2005, Panamerican Consultants, Inc. (PCI) with the assistance of David Maki of Archaeo-Physics, LLC conducted a geophysical survey and archaeological testing of portions of Site 9CE1735 within the Fort Benning Military Reservation in Chattahoochee County, Georgia. The survey area consisted of a 2500 m2 area within Training Area D2 (TA-D2), which is located in the central portion of the fort (Figure 1.1). The survey was conducted in response to a Scope of Work for an assessment of damage to Site 9CE1735 during the construction of the Digital Multipurpose Range Complex (DMPRC) in Fort Benning Military Reservation (Contract No. DABT10-01-R-0017 Delivery Order No. 32). Part of the construction of the DMPRC included the construction of a berm to protect Woodruff Mill Ruins (9CE1735), an archaeological site determined eligible for the National Register of Historic Places. Due to an error in placement of the berm, clearing for berm construction encroached upon a small portion of the site (Figures 1.2-1.7).This report presents the findings of the damage assessment of selected portions of Site 9CE 1735 on the Fort Benning Military Reservation in Chattahoochee County, Georgia. The survey was completed under the terms of a contract between PCI and the Fort Benning Military Reservation. The purpose of this investigation, as specified in the SOW, was to facilitate Fort Benning's compliance with the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA), the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, as amended, Executive Order 11593 (Protection and Enhancement of Cultural Environment), the Archaeological and Historical Preservation Act of 1974, the Department of Army Regulation 200-4, and the Department of Army Pamphlet 200-4.
