Abstract

In 1994 Brandenburg Properties wished to develop a parcel adjoining the Augusta Canal National Landmark district in northern Augusta, Georgia. This required a permit from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Savannah District and one facet of the permit application was an archeological survey of the 60-ac property. The survey conducted in 1994 by Florida Archeological Services, Inc. located three or four sites and five or six isolated artifacts (the report is inconsistent). The artifacts were composed mostly of prehistoric lithic debris and early nineteenth century ceramics and glass. The draft report for this survey recommended that all sites and isolates were not eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places and that the project should be allowed to proceed. In their review comments, the Corps of Engineers questioned the assessment of one site, Field Site 5, arguing that the site required more archeological investigation before a firm assessment of eligibility status could be made. The 1994 report apparently was never finalized and site forms for the three or four sites were never submitted to the state.
