Abstract

The December 8, 2005 GDOT Archaeological Report Short Form for Negative Findings is an Addendum to Phase I Archaeological Survey of Clayton County Signal System Design Project Areas, Clayton County, Georgia. The APE for the project includes everything within the proposed construction project length and within the maximum extent of the existing and required right-of-way as described on a separate sheet. The proposed project would consist of traffic signal upgrades at 12 intersections in Clayton County, Georgia. The project would upgrade traffic signal displays and signal control equipment, provide better signal coordination through new signal interconnection cable, and improve pedestrian safety with crosswalk, pedestrian signals and sidewalk ramps where appropriate. Sidewalks would be constructed in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements. The proposed project would also add turn lanes with 200-foot storage and 180-foot taper on three of twelve of the intersections with SR 54: -Southern Road - southbound right turn lane, -Citizen Road- eastbound left turn lane, and -Commerce Road southbound right turn lane. The proposed Project would not require additional right-of-way. At Citizens Parkway and SR54 - new right-of-way and temporary easement would be required from the southwest corner and right-of-way would be required east of the intersection; At Southern Road and SR 54 - new right-of-way and temporary easement would be required from the northwest corner of the intersection; and At commerce Road and SR 54 - new right-of-way and temporary easement would be required from the northwest corner and right-of-way would be required from the southwest corner of the intersection. The project areas are highly developed. The intersections are in commercial, business districts. Road, driveway, parking lot, and sidewalk construction. Grading and landscaping as well. Reconnaissance (walk-over) of all project areas. No shovel tests were excavated as the project areas have been previously disturbed by road, driveway, parking lot, and sidewalk construction and by grading and landscaping. There are no previously recorded sites within the project areas. Two sites are within a 1-km radius of Intersections 1 & 2: 9CN149 and 9CN 153. Site 9CN149 was identified in 2001 and is a 20th-century site that was recommended ineligible. It is nearly 1-km from Intersection 2. Site 9CN153 is a middle to late nineteenth century/twentieth century house site of unknown eligibility. It was located in 2004 and is roughly 2,000 ft from Intersection 1. A section of the project area was previously surveyed. The site identified, 9CN153, is not in the project area but within a 1-km radius (Battle 2004).
