Abstract

On November 29th and 30th, 2005 Southern Research conducted an intensive archaeological survey of the approximately 22-acre proposed Work Force Training Center Site west of Jackson in Butts County, Georgia under contract with the Butts County Board of Commissioners Office. The project area is located west of Jackson on the north side of Georgia Highway 16 (Figure 1). The project tract is bordered on the west by Fairview Church Road, on the north by a woods line, and on the east by a fence line/hedge. In a letter dated November 3, 2005 the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Historic Preservation Division, recommended a phase I archaeological study of the 22-acre tract by a qualified archaeologist. The purpose of the investigation was to identify archaeological and historical resources within the project area and to evaluate the eligibility of the identified resources for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) in accordance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA). Under direction of Principal Investigator Grace Keith, the entire project tract was intensively surveyed and no archaeological resources were identified.
