Abstract

The proposed project would construct five passing lanes on SR 36 between the towns of Jackson and Stewart in Butts County. The proposed project would retain the existing pavement and widen the roadway with a 12' lane for passing. A section of Site #4 would contain a new alignment constructed with full depth pavement for two 12' travel lanes and one 12' passing lane. Site #5 would contain a section of existing roadway at the structure at Jackson Lake that would be reconstructed to correct the pavement deterioration. Existing right-of-way is approximately 100'. Proposed right-of-way would be approximately 150'. Total project length would be approximately 4.50 miles. An archaeological survey consistent with the proposed changes was conducted for the entire length of the project corridor. An archaeological survey (Level II) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Division Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of work of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources.
