Abstract

New South Associates conducted a Phase I archaeological survey of the proposed I-20 HOV lanes in June and October of 2005. The area surveyed included approximately 12.34 miles of I-20 corridor, 7.46 acres for four park and pool lots, 110 acres of area for two proposed HOV access routes, and 1.41 miles of access road corridor. Survey of the corridor, accomplished through 30meter interval shovel testing and inspection of exposed ground surface, located two isolated finds, and two archaeological sites: 9Do149 and 9Do148. Isolate 1 consists of a ridge and valley chert Guilford projectile point base, and Isolate 2 consists of a quartz core trimming flake and a quart biface. Site 9Do149 is the remnants of a historic grist milling site and Site 9Do148 is a small quartz lithic site. Neither of the newly discovered sites, nor the isolated finds, qualifies for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places and the potential for undiscovered sites within the proposed study areas is low. No further archaeological study within the project area is recommended.
