Abstract

On August 23, 2004 staff archaeologists from the Georgia Department of Transportation assisted Southern Research, Inc., with ground penetrating radar (GPR) assessments of selected areas on the campus of Georgia College and State University in Milledgeville, Georgia. The purpose of the survey was to identify buried archaeological deposits and features. Fieldwork was limited to one day. Archival research and historic maps indicated several areas of high probability for intact archaeological remains, particularly structures associated with the Georgia Penitentiary (1860), and the Charles Herty house. Based on this research, and within the limitations of more recent development, several areas of the campus were selected where GPR was expected to be successful (Figure 1).
