Abstract

On November 9-10 2004, staff archaeologists from the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) conducted a series of ground penetrating radar (GPR) assessments at the Woodbine Mound Site (9CM3) in Camden County, Georgia. This work was completed in cooperation with archaeologist Carolyn Rock, who was teaching an introductory course through Valdosta State University's (VSU) King's Bay Center. The goal of this remote sensing survey was to identify possible burials in an unmarked cemetery associated with the historic rice plantation (Woodbine). Through a combination of traditional archaeological techniques and divining with a local expert, Ms. Rock had earlier identified one burial southeast of the mound. In January 2004, Dan Elliott, of the LAMAR Institute, also conducted a GPR assessment of the area but the results were inconclusive. Our work was viewed as a supplement to the earlier investigations. Results of the current investigations indicate several high probability targets that closely resemble graves.
