Abstract

This is an Archaeological Reassessment of GDOT Project STP-BRS-0692(25) in Haralson County by the GDOT. The proposed project would replace the functionally obsolete and structurally deficient bridge on SR 100 over Walker Creek approximately 3 miles south of Tallapoosa, Georgia. The project would begin approximately 1000 feet south of the existing bridge and continue to approximately 1100 feet north of the bridge. Total length of the project is approximately 0.43 mile. Existing right-of-way is 100 feet. Additional required right-of-way would include a maximum of approximately 45 feet. Since the time of the original survey the project has been changed to include up to 40 feet of additional required right-of-way at various locations throughout the corridor. An archaeological survey consistent with the proposed changes was conducted for the entire project area. An archaeological survey (Level II) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Division Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of work of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources. No existing or eligible National Register resources were located within the project's area of potential environmental effect. It is concluded, therefore, that the project will have no effect upon archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the NRHP provided that the project conforms to that described above.
