Abstract

This is a GDOT archaeological report short form for negative findings for a revised Phase I archaeological survey of the proposed Dekalb intersection improvements in Dekalb county, Georgia. The revision consists of the removal of the intersection at East College Avenue and East-West Howard Street and the addition of the intersection of East-West College Avenue, East-West Howard Street and McDonough Street. The project description and survey conclusions are otherwise unchanged. The study area has been altered significantly. This is particularly true for the intersections within commercial settings. Impacts include paved streets, sidewalks, buried utilities of all sorts, and landscaped planting strips and plots containing any combination of trees, shrubs, flowers, and grasses. In residential settings, impacts are less severe; however, grading and/or filling is evident. Due to the urbanized setting and the fact that right-of-way acquisition is not anticipated, the study area was examined completely through visual inspection. Intersections were photographed and a survey form for each was filled out noting current land use/impacts in each quadrant. The likelihood of encountering buried utilities discouraged shovel testing in unpaved/unsurfaced areas.
