Abstract

This is an Archaeological Assessment of GDOT Project STP-0006-00(017), Baldwin County. The proposed project would improve the intersection of SR 22/Montgomery Street and CR 477/North Jefferson Street in the City of Milledgeville, Baldwin County, Georgia. The southbound approach along CR 477 would be widened to provide a left turn lane onto SR 22. The northbound approach would be re-striped to provide a through lane and left and right turn lanes. The westbound approach of SR 22 would be restriped to provide for a right turn lane. The project would also consist of the milling and inlay of the roadway surface along CR 477, the construction of Type A curb cut ramps at the northeast and southeast corners, and the acquisition of right-of-way from the northeast corner. An archaeological survey consistent with the proposed project description was conducted for the entire length of the project corridor. An archaeological survey (Level I) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Division Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of work of proposed highway projects and, are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources. No existing or eligible National Register resources were located within the project's area of potential environmental effect. It is concluded, therefore, that the project will have no effect upon archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the NRHP provided that the project conforms to that described above.
