Abstract

To initiate special rapid bus service along Memorial Drive from existing Kensington Station near I-285 to Stone Mountain and north along North Hairston Road from Memorial Drive to East Ponce de Leon Avenue. The project consists mainly of installing bus shelters at eight locations within existing right-of-way along the route, the signalization of queue jumper systems at two intersections, a right turn lane at one intersection and the construction of a park and ride facility near Stone Mountain, at the corner of Goldsmith Road and Central Avenue. As shown in the attached project map, the project consists of the following: Kinsington Rail Transit Station - no changes to existing station. A pair of bus shelters at the following intersections: Memorial Drive at Camp Road. Memorial Drive at the entrance drive to Georgia Perimeter College and DeKalb Technical College Memorial Drive at Memorial College Avenue. Memorial Drive at Hambrick Road. Memorial Drive at North Hairston Road. North Hairston Road at Central Drive Mountain Industrial Boulevard at East Ponce de Leon Avenue. A right-turn lane at Memorial Drive and North Hairston Road. A ca. 3 acre park and ride lot at the southwest corner of Goldsmith Road and Central Avenue. The maximum extent of physical impact from the construction of the bus shelters, turn lane and park and ride lot. The typical shelter will be about 6 ft from the edge of the curb and the facility will be a maximum of 16 ft deep. Most shelter stations will be only 12 ft deep. The shelter facilities will be about 60 ft long. The turn lane at the intersection of North Hairston Road and Memorial Drive will require about 10 additional feet of pavement, located on graded road shoulder. The park and ride lot occupies about 3 acres. No archaeological sites have been recorded specifically in any of the project areas.
