Abstract

Phase I Archaeological Survey for I-85 Improvements, Jackson and Banks Counties, Georgia. The proposed projects would consist of the widening and reconstruction of I-85 from just north of SR 11 in Jackson County to just north of SR 15/US 411 in Banks County (see Figure 1). The existing four-lane Interstate highway would be reconstructed and widened to six lanes by constructing two additional lanes and a concrete median barrier within the existing median. The existing I-85 bridges over the North Oconee River and Ridgeway Church Road would be widened to accommodate the additional lanes. The proposed projects would also include lengthening the interchange ramps at SR 82, SR 98/North Elm Street and SR 15/US 411. All construction would be conducted within the existing right-of-way. The APE for the proposed projects would consist of the existing right-of-way, within which all construction and ground-disturbing activity would be confined. Fourteen sites have been recorded within one km of the project corridor. The nearest site to the corridor is 9JK21, located approximately 100m north of the right-of-way boundary.
