Abstract

Project STP-065-3(56) would construct two passing lanes on SR 53 between the towns of Tate and Holcomb in Pickens County, Georgia. This project was originally surveyed by Teresa Lotti in February 2002 (HP010927-004). Since that time the project has been changed to relocate passing lane #1. Passing lane #1 originally began at milepost 28.5 and terminated at milepost 29.5. This passing lane will now be located beginning at milepost 25.7 and terminate at milepost 27.0, the beginning point of passing lane #2. The existing right-of-way for SR 53 is 60 feet. The required right-of-way for passing lane #1 varies with a maximum of 40 additional feet. An archaeological survey consistent with the proposed project description was conducted along the entire length of the project corridor. An archaeological survey (Level II) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Section Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources.
