Abstract

In December, 2006, Environmental Services, Inc. (ESI) performed an intensive cultural resource assessment survey of the proposed Broadhurst Environmental Landfill tract in Wayne County, Georgia. The goal of the survey was to locate, identify, delineate, and evaluate all cultural resources within the parcel, including prehistoric and historic archaeological sites, as well as historic structures. The cultural resource assessment survey included a pedestrian inspection combined with systematic shovel testing at 10, 15, 30, and 90-meter intervals. As a result of the survey, three new archaeological sites (9WY83, 9WY84, 9WY85) and one historic barn with associated outbuildings (9WY86) were recorded, and one isolated find was documented. Two of the archaeological sites (9WY83 and 9WY84) contained early 20th century subsurface artifacts, while 9WY85 was a light density prehistoric artifact scatter. Both of the historic period artifact scatters were within a churned silvicultural zone. The prehistoric deposits at 9WY85 were beneath the silvicultural disturbances, however the artifact density was very light. The historic structure and ancillary features at 9WY86 were in a dilapidated state. Based on silvicultural disturbances at 9WY83 and 9WY84, light artifact density at 9WY85 and the ruinous state of the structures at 9WY86, none of these resources, nor the isolated find are recommended for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) or for any further archaeological considerations.
