Abstract

Management Summary: During February and May 2007, Edwards-Pitman Environmental, Inc. (EPEI) conducted a survey of the proposed new rest area site in the median of Interstate (I) 16 at approximately Milepost 97 in Candler County, Georgia. The APE measures approximately 2.85 miles along I16. The proposed project would also include the construction of approximately 7.5 miles of water line to connect to the City of Metter water system and a sewer treatment facility on site. This would provide water and sewer services to the proposed rest area and would be constructed within the existing right-of-way along State Route (SR) 46 and 1-16. The goal of the survey was to locate and evaluate archaeological sites within the Area of Potential Effect (APE) of the proposed undertaking, so that potential effects to any resources identified could be evaluated in accordance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act. The project was conducted under a contract with Clark Patterson Associates. A review of the Georgia Archaeological Site Files at the University of Georgia in Athens showed that no previously identified archaeological sites have been reported within a one kilometer radius of the APE. Two prehistoric isolated finds were identified during the survey. Due to their low research potential, both isolated finds are recommended ineligible for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). No further archaeological work is recommended in the APE as it is currently defined.
