Abstract

In July 2000, R. S. Webb & Associates (RSWA) conducted a Phase I cultural resources survey of the Arbor Station sewer line corridor. Since July 2000, a section of the corridor through Chapel Hill Golf Course had to be rerouted (Figure 1). The new section of the corridor is within 1.5 meters north of a sewer line constructed during the 1960s. It does not appear that a Phase I archeological survey was conducted for the existing sewer line; however, a large portion of the rerouted section is within an area studied during a Phase I archeological survey of the Chapel Hill Golf Course (Figure 2). This survey was conducted by Law Engineering and Environmental Services in 1991 (Law). Eleven archeological sites were recorded, including Site 9DO64, an Early Woodland occupation considered eligible for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). This site is protected under an in-place preservation plan developed for the Chapel Hill Golf Course project. The purpose of the current field survey is to determine if Site 9DO64 would be adversely affected by the proposed reroute of the sewer line.
