Cultural Resource Survey of the Williams Gas Pipeline-Transco Dynegy Lateral, Midway Meter Station, and Tenaska Meter Station, Heard County, Georgia

Abstract

On April 7, 2000, Panamerican Consultants, Inc. (PCI), of Tampa, Florida, conducted a cultural resources survey of the Dynegy Lateral gas pipeline, the Midway Meter Station, and the proposed location of the Tenaska Meter Station and access road, all located in eastern Heard County, Georgia (Appendix A). Heard County is located within the west-central portion of Georgia approximately 70 km (43.5 miles) southwest of Atlanta. The Dynegy Lateral, which can be found on the 1982 Newnan SW, GA 7.5 minute quadrangle, runs roughly north-south immediately to the west of and parallel to Joe Stevens Road. It starts at an existing pipeline paralleling Highway 34 in the south and runs northwards for about one mile. At the north end of the lateral, the corridor turns east, crossing Joe Stevens Road, and ends at the Midway Meter Station located just inside the Heard County line. The proposed Tenaska Meter Station is located roughly 2 km (1.2 miles) west-southwest of the start of the Dynegy Lateral and can be found on the 1964 Franklin, GA 7.5 minute quadrangle. The proposed meter station is situated to the north side of the existing pipeline. A proposed access road runs from Highway 34 in the south northwards for about 274 m (900 ft.) to the proposed meter station. A dirt track road exists immediately to the east of the proposed access road. The area of impact corresponding to the Dynegy Lateral measured 200 ft. (61.0 m) wide by roughly 1 mile (1.6 km) in length. The size of the proposed Tenaska Meter Station property was 300 x 200 ft. (91.4 x 61.0 m) oriented east-west. The area of impact along the proposed access road to this meter station was defined as a 900-ft. (274.3-m) long by 100-ft. (30.5-m) wide corridor. Survey of the project area resulted in the discovery of one site within the proposed Tenaska Meter Station. This site is recommended as ineligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP).
