Abstract

This report presents the results of an intensive archeological survey performed by Southeastern Archeological Services, Inc. in southern Bibb County, where the Georgia Transmission Corporation wishes to construct the proposed Hartley Bridge Road 115/25/12kV substation and Hartley Bridge Road 115 kV transmission line. The goal of the survey was to locate and evaluate any archeological resources that may be adversely affected by the construction of the substation and line. The survey was undertaken in compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, as amended. The area of potential effect for the project consists of the approximately 2.3 ha (5.68 ac) substation tract and a corridor for the transmission line that is 2.05 km (1.27 mi) long and 46 m (150 ft) wide. The proposed corridor follows an old property line, crossing the headwaters of four small drainages. The wooded substation tract was mostly sloping, but included part of a ridge crest. No archeological sites or historic house sites were known to exist in the project area. The project area was surface searched and shovel tested to locate evidence of archeological sites. One site was discovered in the proposed transmission line. We recommend that the site has little to no further research potential. Thus, we recommend that the site is not eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places. We conclude that the construction of the proposed substation and transmission line will have no adverse effects to significant (eligible) archeological resources and should be granted clearance to proceed.
